New Year's Resolutions For Your Home & Soul

People are getting ready for a whole new decade. 2020 is fast approaching, and there’s never been a better time to start fresh in all areas of your life. The most efficient way to conquer a new goal is from within the home. Here are a few pointers that can get you started:

  1. The best way to begin a new decade and to create new energy is with a decluttering and reorganising your home. When you’re surrounded by an environment that supports you and the lifestyle you want to create, it’s far easier to achieve the goals you want to conquer. My guess is saving money, time and energy is a part of what you want in the new year. By decluttering you create an environment which shows only what you love the most, and this impacts unnecessary buying, encourages purchasing items for investment and will help you work, rest and play with far more ease in your home. Read about the specific ways you can achieve this here!

  2. If one of your goals is to bring your family together, avoid making your TV the centre of the living space. Designing living spaces around a TV is a universal approach and seems like the easiest layout option. But a TV discourages connection and promotes itself as the only way to relax. Try angling your armchairs and lounge towards each other to encourage watching television as a family activity or to just enjoy resting on the lounges without having it turned on. And if it’s time for a new television, responsibly dispose of it by donating it to someone in need or selling it. Then consider investing in a Samsung Frame TV - to hide your TV as art!

  3. Improving health will always be on everyone’s New Year's resolution list. A fun way to have the whole family involved is to grow your own fruit and vegetables. Not only are you introducing more greenery to your diet but watering and weeding your patch of earth becomes an incredible way to wind down after work, and there are countless studies promoting it for improving mental health.

  4. There aren't many excuses left for using plastic. There is a sustainable option for almost every personal and household item these days. Start your collection with the items you’re throwing away the most and replace them. Instead of plastic bags, invest in some cute fabric shopping bags. To replace plastic containers that just break and end up in our oceans and landfill, purchase some beautiful glass food storage (food looks so lovely all lined up in glass containers - and it’s so easy to see what’s inside this way!) Also think about items that you don’t need to use as much. Maybe it’s time to stop using your Dryer as much and invest in a lovely clothes line. And turn the lights off whilst having dinner and light some candles - low lighting helps with digestion and creates intimacy amongst your family.

  5. Create more ambience. As an interior designer, I get to introduce my clients to a more beautiful way of living. This one is really simple and straightforward - invest in some beeswax candles, a really relaxing Spotify playlist, some amazing ethical tea bags (I love T2 or Honest Tea!), some incense and a really high quality wool throw for your lounge. When you invest in your home, your home rewards you with comfort and good health.

  6. Skip heading out for your monthly date night or your next girls night out. If it’s warm, throw a garden picnic with an Instagram-worthy spread full of your favourite foods and drinks. Or cook some food with your family, move the lounges and eat together on the floor. Your kids will remember that night forever. The beauty of this goal is you’re saving so much money, effort and time. And the planet - the hospitality industry uses so many resources to keep us entertained!

  7. Lastly, treat yourself and ask for help. I recently wrote about why hiring an interior designer is an investment rather than a lavish expense. The same way that you need to outsource most things to save yourself money, effort and time - asking someone to help you with the layout and design of your home is an incredibly smart investment. This is why I love what I do. If you need help at home, please reach out, I’d love to hear all about it!
