Redefining ‘working from home’

Home office...seems to be the new buzz phase! With the new measures and precautions in place, it's opened up the concept of 'working from home' to a side of our population that has not previously experienced this phenomenon.

Personally, I'm in my 4th year of working from home (with super fun stints at co-working spaces interjected for variety) and I love it! There are certainly pros and cons to the arrangement, like anything in life, but for me, it works.

Given my field of expertise, my home office was always going to be a designed space which made me feel good about sitting down to work. Like anywhere else in our homes, unless it's beautiful (whatever that means for YOU) then it's never going to make you happy and provide the support you need.

Here are my 4 tips to creating a home office which makes you feel good:

1. Have a dedicated area (if possible). Whether your new home office situation is now a permanent thing or temporary, it's vital to have dedicated space to work from which is not a communal area, e.g. the dining table. This helps you stay organised and avoid the overwhelming chaotic feelings of having work stuff visibly in your personal space.

2. Boundaries. Having your work space in a separate area of the home e.g. a spare bedroom, is key for switching off and mentally creating segregation between work and personal time. Being able to close the door and "leave" work is important for your mental and emotional health.

3. Clear the clutter. Get rid of the paper and start to incorporate some organisation. Nothing will make you feel less motivated and more overwhelmed than sitting down to a work space which is overflowing. Keep it clear and clean. Your thoughts will mirror your space.

4. Personalise. Make it feel like you. Add a plant or fresh cut leaves from the garden (like mine). Photos, coloured pens, favourite tea cup. Whatever makes you smile!
