"What is a 'healthy home' and how do I create one?"
From the inception of my design journey, I was instilled with a simple yet profound principle: invest in the absolute best quality you can afford. This ethos isn’t just a design philosophy; it’s a way of life that I’ve woven into the fabric of my own home and work. Today, I extend this wisdom to my clients, urging them to embrace a mindset that prioritises fewer possessions, focusing instead on the treasures that evoke love and appreciation. Join me as we explore the transformative power of quality over quantity in crafting homes that are not only aesthetically rich but inherently healthy.
1. INDOOR AIR QUALITY:
Ensure good air quality by proper ventilation and minimising the use of products that emit harmful pollutants. Integrate air-purifting plants, and consider using natural cleaning products to maintain a fresh and clean atmosphere.
2. NATURAL LIGHT & BIOPHILIC DESIGN:
Maximise natural light in your home to support circadian rhythms and elevate mood. Incorporate biophilic design principles by bringing elements of nature indoors, such as plants and natural materials, to foster a connection with the outdoors.
3. NON-TOXIC MATERIALS:
Select furnishings, finishes, and materials that are non-toxic and eco-friendly. This includes using low-VOC paints, sustainable timber, and non-toxic cleaning supplies. Avoid materials that may off-gas harmful chemicals such as fabric stain protection.
4. ERGONOMICS & COMFORT:
Prioritise ergonomic furniture and layouts to promote good posture and reduce physical strain. A comfortable and well-designed space contributes to a sense of ease and relaxation. Position furniture towards the outdoors rather than revolving layouts around the TV.
5. DECLUTTER & SIMPLIFY:
Create a clutter-free environment by decluttering your living spaces. Embrace the philosophy of "less is more," keeping only the items that are meaningful and contribute positively to the overall atmosphere.
6. MINDFUL TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION:
Integrate technology mindfully, considering its impact on both convenience and health. Opt for energy-efficient and eco-friendly appliances, and be conscious of minimising electromagnetic field exposure e.g. avoid the mobile phone on the bedside table!
7. CONNECTION WITH NATURE:
Enhance your home with elements that evoke a connection to nature. This can include incorporating natural textures, colors, and organic shapes into your design, as well as creating outdoor spaces that invite relaxation. This is a part of the biophilic principles.
8. EMOTIONAL WELLBEING:
Design your home to support emotional well-being by incorporating elements that bring joy and comfort. Personalize your space with items that hold sentimental value and promote a positive atmosphere. Family photos, collected treasures from travels or special books.
9. HOLISTIC DESIGN APPROACH:
Approach your home design holistically, considering the interconnectedness of various spaces. Aim for a harmonious balance that addresses physical, mental and emotional aspects of wellbeing.
Creating a healthy home is a dynamic and ongoing process. Regularly assess and adjust your living environment to align with your evolving understanding of what contributes to a healthy and harmonious lifestyle.
